Northwestern Box ScoreSan Diego State Box ScoreHONOLULU, Hawaii. – The Longwood University softball team dropped two games at the Hawaii Invitational hosted by Hawaii Friday in Honolulu. The Lancers, who are now 11-14 on the year, fell to Northwestern 4-3 and dropped a 4-2 decision to San Diego State. LU will close out the tournament tomorrow, March 18 when it faces off against Kansas at 9:00 p.m. E.T.
Against Northwestern, Longwood scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the top of the third inning to gain the 3-0 advantage. With freshman outfielder Danielle Skapura/Friendswood, Texas (Friendswood) on second base and sophomore outfielder Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) on third base, sophomore shortstop Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt which scored Hooe and gave the Lancers the 1-0 lead. It was Ryan Washington who increased LU’s lead to 3-0 in the third inning when she hit a two-run home run to center field; her second home run of the tournament.
The Wildcats mounted a comeback in the bottom half of the third, scoring three runs to tie the game. Tammy Williams, who hit a one-out double to left field, scored when Garland Cooper doubled to left field. Kristen Amegin tied the game when she hit a two-run home run to center field.
Northwestern scored the winning run in the bottom of the fourth when Sheila McCorkle was driven home by Erin Dyer, who singled to center field.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) took the loss for Longwood, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, while striking out one and walking two in four innings of action.
Courtney Foster earned the pitching win for Northwestern giving up three runs, two earned, on two hits, while striking out 11 and walking four in seven innings of work.
Against San Diego State, Longwood scored one run in the top of the first inning to take the lead. Hooe, who started the inning off with a single to right field, advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Skapura and reached third on a single by Ryan Washington, scored on a fielder’s choice hit by senior outfielder Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County).
SDSU scored two runs in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the third to jump ahead 3-1.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Lancers scored one run to cut San Diego State’s advantage to 3-2. With the bases loaded, Hooe singled to left field to drive in senior first baseman Victoria Masters/Lake City, Fla. (Thomas University-Ga.). Longwood had an opportunity to tie the game or take the lead, but with bases loaded again and two outs, Skapura field out to left field.
SDSU added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to help secure the 4-2 victory.
Mills took the pitching loss for Longwood, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits, while striking out one and walking two in 3.2 innings of work.
