Baseball Falls To VCU 12-4; Lancers Hosting University of Dayton This Weekend, March 17-19

Junior Tyler Childress Collects Two Hits Against Rams At Lancer Stadium

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 12-4 collegiate baseball decision to visiting VCU Wednesday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers are now 12-12 this season, while the Rams improved to 11-6. Longwood will play again on Friday, March 17, hosting the University of Dayton at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m. -- the first of a three-game weekend series against the Flyers.

Against VCU, Longwood fell behind 6-1 through three innings and could not recover as the Rams added two runs in the fifth inning, three more runs in the sixth, and a final run in the seventh inning. The Lancers scored one run in the third inning, two runs in the fifth, and one more run in the eighth inning.

In the third, freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (1-4, RBI) scored with one out when classmate Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-5, RBI) reached on a fielder’s choice. In the fifth, junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (1-2, 2 RBI) hit his first home run at Longwood, a one-out, two-run shot over the left field fence. In the eighth, Maupin’s two-out RBI single scored sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4) who had reached on a single.

Junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (4-2) took the pitching loss with the first 1.2 innings on the mound, yielding six hits and three earned runs. Classmate Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-4) led the Lancers with two hits.

VCU was led by Joe Meador (4-5, 3 RBI), Tim St. Clair (4-5, 2 RBI), and Sergio Miranda (4-6), each with four hits on the afternoon. Meador hit for the cycle with a home run, triple, double, and single along with a stolen base, while St. Clair added two doubles, and Miranda had a double and a stolen base. Bill Wieland (1-1) got the pitching win for the Rams with the first 5.0 innings, scattering six hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts.
