BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Longwood University dropped a 13-1 collegiate baseball decision at Samford University of the Ohio Valley Conference Sunday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Lancers are now 12-11 this season, while the Bulldogs improved to 8-8. Longwood will play again on Wednesday, March 15, hosting VCU at Lancer Stadium in Farmville beginning at 2:30 p.m..
At Samford in the finale of a three-game weekend series, Longwood fell behind 1-0 in the first inning before the Bulldogs added six runs in both the third and eighth innings. The Lancers avoided the shutout in the ninth inning when freshman Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (2-2, RBI) blasted his first collegiate home run, a one-out solo shot to straight-away center field, one of his two hits on the day. Also collecting two hits for LU was sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4), while junior Ryan Rowe/Richmond (Varina) (1-2) added a single.
Freshman Kevin Light/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (2-4) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, yielding 10 hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts. Classmate John Walker II/Alexandria (West Potomac) was effective for 2.0 innings of shutout relief, allowing just one hit with one strikeout.
