BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Longwood University split a collegiate baseball doubleheader at Samford University Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama; winning the second game 8-7 after dropping the first game 6-3. The Lancers are now 12-10 this season, while the Bulldogs are now 7-8 this season. Longwood and Samford will play again on Sunday, March 12, in Alabama beginning at 1 p.m..
In the nightcap at Samford, Longwood scored five runs in the second inning before adding one run in the third, fifth, and finally the decisive run in the seventh inning for the victory. The Lancers led 6-0 in the third before the hosts closed to within 6-3 through three innings and tied it at 7-7 through six innings.
In the second, freshman David Loel/Frankfort, Ohio (Frankfort Adena) (1-2, 2 RBI) hit a one-out double to score junior captain Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-2) and classmate Jon Quigley/Annandale (W.T. Woodson) (2-4, RBI) after each had singled. Redshirt sophomore captain Zach Zigrang/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) (2-4, 3 RBI) later followed with a three-run double that scored Loel along with freshmen Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (0-2) and Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (2-4). Bailey had walked while Heidler had reached on a single.
In the third, Quigley’s two-out single scored sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-4) who had singled to open the frame. In the fifth, sophomore Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-3, 2 RBI) plated von Gersdorff again with a one-out sacrifice fly after von Gersdorff again had singled to lead-off. In the seventh, Lydon’s two-out single scored Ames who had kept the inning alive with a two-out double.
Junior Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-2) earned the pitching win with 1.1 innings of late relief, scattering two hits and two earned runs. Classmate Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (1) earned the save with the final 1.0 hitless and scoreless inning on the mound.
In the opener, Longwood fell behind 6-0 through six innings before scoring two runs in the seventh and adding one run in the ninth. Lydon (1-3, 2 RBI) had a two-run double in the seventh to score Ames (2-4) and von Gersdorff (3-4) who had each singled. In the ninth, Quigley (3-4, RBI) had a two-out RBI double. Junior captain Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (2-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.0 innings, yielding six hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.
