BOX SCORE

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-0 collegiate baseball decision to visiting VCU Friday afternoon at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.  The Lancers (2-3) managed just five hits against two VCU pitchers who combined for 14 strikeouts.  The Rams (1-0) were led by Trai Harris (1-3, 2 RBI) at the plate, and Harold Mozingo (1-0) on the mound as the right-hander went the first 6.0 innings (3h, 10k).  The remaining two games of the series, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, have been canceled due to the weather.

With over a dozen professional scouts watching, Mozingo limited Longwood to just three singles over the first six shutout innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks.  VCU scored all the runs it would need in the first inning as Sergio Miranda (1-4, RBI) singled and later scored when Lancer junior Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (0-1) hit consecutive batters to force in the run.  The Rams added a run in the second when Miranda’s sacrifice fly scored Bobby Holmes (0-2) who had reach on a fielder’s choice.  VCU plated four runs in the fourth inning, sparked by a two-run single from Harris and aided by another hit batter, passed ball, and wild pitch as well as a throwing error.

In addition, Kwan Evans (2-5) collected two hits for the visitors, while John Leonard (1) earned the pitching save with the final 3.0 scoreless innings -- yielding only two hits with four strikeouts.

Longwood received hits from junior Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3), sophomore Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-4), along with freshmen Brandon Maupin/Woodbridge (Potomac) (1-2), Robbie Bailey/Mechanicsville (Hanover) (1-3), and Paul Heidler/Warrenton (Notre Dame Academy) (1-4).  McCullough went the first 3.2 innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts.  The Lancers used four pitchers, including junior Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan), who went the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit.
