WASHINGTON, D.C. – Longwood University dropped a 60-49 men’s basketball road decision at Patriot League member American University Monday night in Washington, D.C.. The Lancers (3-6) rallied from a 16-point halftime deficit to within five points with 6:06 remaining but could get no closer, led by senior Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams) with a game-high 15 points. The host Eagles (6-2) were led by Brayden Billbe and Andre Ingram with 13 points each. Longwood will play again Wednesday, December 6, at Big South Conference member High Point University beginning at 7 p.m. in North Carolina.
Longwood fell behind 4-0 just 25-seconds into the contest as American jumped out to a 15-2 advantage at 13:14 as Ingram scored five early points. Sumter’s jumper at 12:03 made it 15-6 before Ingram made a three-point field goal to help the Eagles to a 20-6 lead with 10:49 left in the first half. The Lancers closed to within 22-14 at 6:56 on a layup from sophomore Kirk Williams/White Plains, N.Y. (Woodlands). American, however, outscored Longwood 13-5 the remainder of the period to lead 35-19 at the intermission. The Eagles shot 62% (16-26) from the field in the first half, compared to 24% (8-34) by the visiting Lancers.
American took its largest lead at 41-23 with 16:43 left to play, and still led 47-31 at 13:43. Longwood used a 7-1 run to close to within 48-38 with 9:11 remaining as Williams scored six quick points, including a dunk off the backside lob-pass. The Lancers continued with their momentum and was within 50-45 at 6:06, capping a 22-9 run after falling behind by 18 points. It was 54-48 after another jumper from Sumter with 4:19 on the clock, but unfortunately, the Eagles would outscore the visitors 6-1 over the final 3:39 for their homecourt victory.
Sumter finished with a game-high 15 points to lead Longwood, while Williams added 10 points. Junior Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds to go along with his eight points, while senior Clayton Morgan/Brooklyn, N.Y. (Fashion Institute) added six points and nine rebounds. LU shot 33% (20-60) from the field, including just 10% (2-20) on three-point field goals, and 58% (7-12) at the free throw line. Longwood did out-rebound American 43-33, but committed 18 turnovers that the Eagles converted into 20 points.
Billbe and Ingram each scored 13 points to lead American, while Derrick Mercer added 12 points as the trio combined to shoot 15-28 from the field for the Eagles. AU shot 48% (25-52) from the field as a team, including 24% (4-17) on three-pointers, and 43% (6-14) at the line.
