BOX SCORE

WILLIAMSBURG, VA—The women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling to William and Mary 70-27 Tuesday evening in Williamsburg. The loss puts the Lancers at 3-1 on the season, while William and Mary improves to 3-1 on the year. Longwood will travel to Greensboro, N.C. to take part in the UNC-Greensboro Thanksgiving Tournament Friday November 24-Saturday November 25. The Lancers will open up the tournament with a 1 p.m. match-up against host Greensboro.

After the Tribe jumped out to a 4-0 lead, senior Ashleigh Hollman/Centreville (Westfield) brought the Lancers within one on a three point shot with 16:12 to go in the opening half. William and Mary went on to score the next 15 points, grabbing a 16 point lead before junior Keiva Small/Norfolk (Norview) laid in a shot from the paint for the 22-5 score. On back-to-back baskets by the Lancers, one from Cassandra Smith/Fredericksburg (Massaponax) and the other from Odessa Williams/Stratford, Conn. (Stratford), Longwood was able to bring the game within 13 before the Tribe went on an 8-0 run to close out the first half.

“Its hard to come out on top when you give a team so many second chances,” stated head coach Pamela Bass. “We have to start putting together 40 minutes of Longwood basketball to compete with the top teams we will face in the upcoming games.”

William and Mary took control in the second half, keeping the Lancers out of the game en route to its third consecutive win of the year. Williams was perfect from the line going 4-4 finishing the game with six points while Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) tallied five in the loss.

“Our game plan got away from us tonight and we were unable to execute the way we would have liked to against William and Mary. We need to start winning the battle on the boards.”

For the night the Lancers were unable to get going offensively shooting a season low 18.0% from the floor and out rebounded by a count of 50-24.
