BOX SCORE
CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Longwood University rallied with two late goals for a 2-1 women’s soccer road victory at Big South Conference member Charleston Southern University Wednesday in South Carolina. It was the second win in two seasons against the Lady Buccaneers as the Lancers improved to 6-4-2, while Charleston Southern dropped to 3-6-2. Longwood will return home to host Francis Marion University this Saturday, October 7, at the Athletics Complex in Farmville beginning at 1 p.m..
At CSU, Longwood trailed 1-0 at the intermission as Christine Bethke scored early for the hosts at 10:35 on a rebound off the keeper with an assist from Sarah Catenacci. It remained a one-goal deficit until the 73:03 mark when freshman Kaylyn Mahon/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) tied the match at 1-1 with a penalty-kick goal. The Lancers tallied the game-winner just 5:40 later as senior Vanessa Congdon/Charlotte, N.C. (Charlotte Catholic) scored with a header into the net on a crossing assist from Mahon.
“We went down a goal early again but responded immediately with some of our best possession and attacking soccer,” explained 13th-year head coach Todd Dyer. “It was just a question of whether we would break through and get a goal. We did, and the rest is history — overall an emotional but satisfying day for our program.”
Longwood took an 11-9 advantage in shots, and had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) (90:00) went the distance in front of the net for the Lancers with four saves. Jenna Uvalle (90:00) also played the duration for the Lady Buccaneers with three saves.
