BOX SCORE
WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Freshmen Martin Vickerton/Derbyshire, England (Kirk Hallam Technical College) and Chernor Diallo/Alexandria (Mount Vernon) teamed up on a corner kick with 3:46 to go in the first overtime, to give the Lancers a 1-0 win over Howard in Atlantic Soccer Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C.. The overtime was the fourth consecutive game Longwood went into the extra frame. The win puts the Lancers at 4-8-4 overall and 1-2-2 in the conference while Howard falls to 3-10-1 on the year and 0-4 in the ASC. Longwood will return to action on Tuesday October 24, hosting the VMI Keydets in a 7 p.m. match-up.
Longwood controlled the ball and kept the Bison on their heels for the first 25 minutes. Howard began to gain its confidence as the game went on and tried to catch the Lancer defense on a counter. The Lancers looked to have went ahead 1-0 at the 75th minute, when sophomore Marcus Dixon/Gloucester (Gloucester) put a free kick past Howard’s Chris Taylor, but the goal was whistled back on an offsides call. The Bison pressed in the final minutes and were awarded a free kick in the waning moments of regulation. Keeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) tipped the well hit shot over the crossbar sending the game to overtime.
After the teams battle for 90:00 with no result, the Lancers and Bison headed into the first ten minute overtime period. With less than four minutes remaining in the first frame, Longwood earned a corner kick that was taken by Vickerton. Vickerton sent in a ball across the box where Diallo volleyed the ball into the back of the net from about ten yards out for the 1-0 final. The win was the Lancers first overtime win of the season.
Youmans recorded the shutout in net stopping four shots in 96:13 of time in net, while Howard’s Taylor made six saves. Longwood held a 15-11 edge in shots and had a 8-0 advantage in corner kicks.
“Today’s game was scrappy, hard fought game with limited chances,” stated second-year head coach Jon Atkinson. “It’s great to be on the winning side and the shot that sealed it for us was fantastic.”
