Field Hockey Falls To Georgetown In Overtime 3-2

Senior Alexis Ramey Tallies Her Third Goal Of The Season

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-2 overtime field hockey decision at Georgetown University Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Lancers now currently hold a 2-2 record, while the Hoyas earned their first win of the season and are 1-2. Longwood will play its next match Sunday, September 11 against Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m.

Longwood jumped out on top scoring a goal at the 14:30 mark of the first half. Senior forward Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina) was credited with the goal; her third of the season.

Longwood held onto the lead until 47th minute when Erica Chan of Georgetown scored on an assist by Maggie Farrand to knot the game at 1-1. The Hoyas then gained the lead with 10 minutes to play in regulation on a penalty corner goal scored by Lauren Sheets. The goal was assisted by Megan Cellucci. The Lancers kept pressing and was able to score the equalizer and send the game into sudden-death overtime when senior midfielder Sarah Hitchings/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) scored her first goal of the season at the 65:36 mark off an assist by classmate Marina Sizow/Virginia Beach (Kempsville).

Just eight minutes into the first overtime though, Farrand found Katie Lachman who hit a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the game-winning goal.

Georgetown took the 23-11 edge in shots and a 7-2 edge in penalty corners. Schmitz finished the contest with nine saves for the Lancers, while Deirdre Crovo made four saves for the Hoyas.
