BOX SCORE
FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a high-scoring 6-4 women’s soccer home shootout to visiting Coastal Carolina University Thursday night at Lancer Field in Farmville. The Lancers dropped to 2-8, while the Chanticleers improved to 8-3 behind a hat-trick from Blair Monroe. Longwood will play again next Saturday, October 8, hosting Francis Marion University at Lancer Field beginning at 3 p.m. during the institution’s annual Oktoberfest.
Against Coastal Carolina of the Big South Conference, Longwood opened the scoring early in the match when freshman Brooke Brumby/Gaithersburg, Md. (Quince Orchard) scored at 3:07 with a one-touch finish over the keeper’s head, assisted by sophomore Kristina Reed/Spotsylvania (Chancellor). Monroe took over for the Chanticleers, scoring three consecutive goals (7:43, 23:25, 31:44) during a span of 24:01 to push the visitors ahead 3-1. She was assisted by Leah Hackmann, Kristina Fisher, and Jill Karelitz, respectively. Coastal was not finished, however, and added three more unanswered goals -- six in-a-row total -- for a 6-1 advantage at 51:43. CCU led 5-1 at the intermission with goals from Fisher (41:47) and Heather Haupt (43:00), assisted by Alyssa Hunt and Karelitz, respectively; and Rachel Devine added the sixth goal (51:43), assisted by Bobbie Parsons.
Longwood refused to quit, though, and senior Melissa Cary/Bristow (Brentsville) scored unassisted on a bending corner kick at 54:12. The Lancers continued pressing and junior Anna Gravely/Virginia Beach (Frank W. Cox) tallied with a smooth slider at 56:20, assisted by sophomore Katie Young/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne). LU made it even more interesting at 59:26, its third goal in a span of 5:14, when freshman Beth Shade/Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Cedar Cliff) finished-off a loose ball in front of the net to make it 6-4 and still lots of time on the clock. Unfortunately, the hosts could not move the net over the final 30:34 as the visitors hung on for the road win.
Coastal Carolina took a 15-12 advantage in shots, though Longwood had a 7-4 edge in corner kicks. Junior keeper Heather Storrie/Spring Grove, Pa. (Spring Grove) played the first 45 minutes in front of the net for the Lancers, allowing five goals while making two saves. Sophomore Anne Whitmore/Charlottesville (Western Albemarle) played the final 45 minutes in goal, yielding just one goal with four saves. Jaclyn Stoll played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Chanticleers, allowing four goals with one save.
