EMMITSBURG, Md. -- Longwood University earned a 2-1 men’s soccer come-from-behind victory over host Mount St. Mary’s Saturday afternoon in Emmitsburg, Md. Sophomore forward Todd Runey/Midlothian (Collegiate) scored both goals for the Lancers. Longwood improved its record to 2-5-1, while Mount St. Mary’s fell to 1-4-2 on the season. The Lancers will be back in action Tuesday, September 27 when they play at Duke, who is currently ranked 11th in the latest Division I NSCAA/adidas National Rankings. It will be the third game this month that will pitt the Lancers against a top-25 team.
Mount St. Mary’s took a 1-0 lead at the 30:49 mark when Brandon Moncrief scored on a header off a corner taken by Pierre Del Aguila.
The Mount held onto the slight 1-0 edge until 81st minute when Runey scored his third goal of the season to tie the game. Sophomore defender Gary Smith/Ashland (Patrick Henry) was credited with the assist. A little over a minute after his first goal, Runey again found the back of the net; this time he won a defensive battle and blasted the game-winner from 20-yards out.
Mount St. Mary’s finished the game with a 19-8 advantage in shots, while Longwood took a 9-6 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Brandt Youmans/Gaithersburg, Md. (Damascus) finished the game with eight saves for the Lancers, while the Lancer defense added four saves. Mark Murphy closed out the contest making four saves for Mount St. Mary’s.
