PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Longwood University dropped a 1-0 field hockey decision at Temple Saturday afternoon in Philadelphia, Pa. The Lancers dropped to 2-5 this season, while the Owls improved to 4-6 overall. Longwood will play its next match tomorrow, Sunday, September 25 at American at 1:00 p.m.. American is currently ranked fourth in the STX/NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll.
The lone goal of the contest came off a penalty corner at the 12:55 mark of the first half. Temple’s Megan Hannahoe hit a shot past sophomore goalkeeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) for the game-winning goal. Alli Lokey was credited with the assist.
Temple took the 17-5 edge in shots and a 10-2 advantage in penalty corners. Schmitz, who is currently ranked ninth in the Division I Field Hockey statistics in save percentage (.808) and is first in the Northern Pacific Field Hockey Conference (NorPac) statistics in save percentage and goals against average (1.78) and third in saves (42), finished the contest with nine saves, while Erin Hanshue made two saves for the Owls.
