FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 15-4 baseball triumph past visiting Appalachian State University Wednesday at Lancer Stadium. The Lancers improved to 11-19 this season with their home win, while the Mountaineers dropped to 7-23. Longwood will play again Friday, April 8, at VMI in Lexington beginning at 3 p.m. - the first of a three-game weekend series against the Keydets.
Against ASU of the Southern Conference, the host Lancers broke an early 1-1 tie after one inning with two runs in the third, four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, and three more runs in the sixth inning to lead 14-2 through six innings. The Mountaineers had added a run in the sixth inning, and scored two more runs in the eighth inning, while LU pushed across another run in the eighth inning as well. Appalachian committed seven errors during the game, while Longwood finished with three mistakes.
Longwood still pounded 14 hits off four ASU pitchers, led by sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (3-4, 4 RBI) who collected three hits and four RBI, including an RBI single in the fourth, a two-out, two-run single in the fifth, and a two-out RBI double off the left-field fence in the eighth. Sophomores Matt Duval/Mechanicsburg, Pa. (Trinity) (2-5, 3 RBI) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-4, 2 RBI), along with freshmen Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-5) and Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-5, RBI) each had two hits for the Lancers. Duval had the big blast on the day with a three-run home run, the first of his collegiate career, in the sixth. Yarbrough contributed a pair of run-scoring doubles, while von Gersdorff also had an RBI double. Sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (1-5, 3 RBI) added three RBI for LU.
Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (3-2) earned the pitching win with the first 6.0 innings, scattering three hits and one earned run with three strikeouts. McCullough retired 15-straight ASU batters during one stretch of the game.
Appalachian State was led by Julian Brown (2-3) who had two hits and scored three runs along with two stolen bases, while Kevin Butler (2-4, RBI) also had a pair of hits, including an RBI double. Brian Caudill (2-4) took the mound loss with the first 3.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.
Longwood and Appalachian State were meeting for the first-time ever in the sport of baseball.
