NORFOLK, Va., – Longwood University swept both games of a college softball doubleheader at Norfolk State Sunday afternoon; its third-straight doubleheader sweep in four days. The Lancers won the first game 5-2 and closed out the nightcap with a 11-1 victory in seven innings. The Lancers improved to 20-16 overall on the season, and have won six straight, while the Spartans dropped to 7-22 on the year. Longwood will be back in action Wednesday, April 6 when they play a doubleheader at Radford beginning at 2:00 p.m.
In the opener, Longwood scored three runs in the first inning to take the early lead. With senior Shamana Washington/Rhoadesville (Orange County) on second and senior Jen Steele/Manassas Park (Manassas) on first, classmate Megan Camden/Bedford (Liberty) cracked a double to left field to score Shamana Washington. Sophomore Pepper Wilson/Mechanicsville (Lee-Davis) stepped up to the plate next and singled to right field to score both Steele and Camden. Norfolk State cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom half of the first when Cassandra Petway scored on a single by Katie Byrne.
The game went scoreless for the next three innings until the top of the fifth inning when Shamana Washington scored to give the Lancers the 4-1 lead. The Spartans answered with a one-run fifth of their own. Jennifer Morrison hit a lead-off home run to left field to help cut the Lancer lead to 4-2. Longwood tacked on another run in the six inning when freshman Caitlin Hooe/Richmond (Douglas Freeman) scored after Shamana Washington singled to the shortstop. Norfolk State mustered up one more run, which came in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Lancers would not allow another run and earned the two-run victory.
Shamana Washington led the Lancers going 2-3 with and RBI and two runs scored, while Wilson went 2-4 with three RBI. Steele earned the victory for the Lancers, her 13th of the season, giving up three runs, two of which were earned, on seven hits, while striking out two and walking three.
In the nightcap, the game was scoreless for the first three innings. Longwood finally broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning with four runs. The inning was highlighted by junior Mallory Gordon/Powhatan (Powhatan) who singled up the middle to drive in two of the innings four runs. The Lancers added three runs in the sixth and had a four run seventh to lead 11-0. Freshman Ryan Washington/Bealeton (Liberty) highlighted the sixth inning hitting her third home run of the season. The lone Spartan run came in the bottom of the seventh inning on a lead-off home run by Lenore Heron.
Gordon led the Lancers in the nightcap, going 3-4, with three RBI and three runs scored. Hooe added three hits, with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Rachel Mills/Quinton (New Kent County) earned the victory for LU, her seventh of the season, giving up one run on five hits, while striking out five and walking only one.
