CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 5-1 baseball decision at the University of Virginia Wednesday night in Charlottesville. The Lancers dropped to 14-24 this season while the Cavaliers improved to 26-13 with their home victory. Longwood will play again next Tuesday, April 26, against VCU in a doubleheader to be played in Petersburg.

At Virginia, the Cavaliers of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) took a 1-0 lead in the third inning before Longwood tied the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. UVA scored three runs in the seventh inning to lead 4-1, and added an insurance run in the eighth inning for the final four-run margin.

Virginia got two hits each from Ryan Hudson (2-3, RBI) and Mike Campagna (2-4, 2 RBI) as Hudson hit a solo home run in the eighth while Campagna had a pair of RBI singles. Kyle Werman (1-3, RBI) added an RBI triple in the decisive seventh. Pat McAnaney (5-0) earned the pitching win for the Cavaliers with the first 8.0 innings, yielding three hits and one earned run with four strikeouts.

Longwood had tied the game in the sixth when senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-4) crossed the plate on a delayed steal as sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (2-4) was caught attempting to steal second base. Balus and Ames had each singled in their respective, back-to-back at-bats in the inning. Junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-3) collected the only other hit for the Lancers. Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (1-7) took the mound loss with the first 6.1 innings, scattering five hits and three earned runs with three strikeouts.

Longwood and Virginia were meeting for only the ninth-time ever, but for the second time this season as the Cavaliers took an 8-0 win past the Lancers back on March 8. UVA now leads the overall series 7-2.
