FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took a 6-5 baseball triumph past visiting James Madison University Tuesday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. It was the first-ever win over JMU for the Lancers who improved to 14-23 this season with their home victory, while the Dukes dropped to 15-21. Longwood will play at the University of Virginia on Wednesday, April 20, in Charlottesville beginning at 7 p.m..
Against JMU, Longwood fell behind 4-0 in the third inning, and trailed 5-1 in the fifth inning but scored four runs in the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. The Lancers score the go ahead run in the sixth inning when freshman Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-4, RBI) crossed the plate on an RBI grounder by classmate Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (0-3, RBI). Ullrich had opened the inning with a single, and had advanced to third on a double from senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-4).
James Madison had opened with four runs in the third as Michael Cowgill (2-5, 3 RBI) hit a three-run triple, and then scored himself on a double from Kellen Kulbacki (2-4, RBI). The Dukes added their fifth run in the fifth when Cowgill reached on a single, stole second base, and was plated on a single from Matt Sluder (4-5, RBI) who had four hits on the day to lead the visitors.
Longwood scored its first run in the fourth when Ullrich hit a two-out solo home run to right-center field. The Lancers added four runs in the fifth as senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-4, RBI) singled to score Lydon who had been hit by a pitch to open the inning. Junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-3) scored the second run of the inning on a passed ball after he had singled following Lydon to the plate. Balus crossed the plate on an RBI grounder by sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (0-4, RBI), and classmate Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (0-4) scored the game-tying run on a wild pitch after he too had been hit by a pitch.
Sophomore Brett Mangigian/Midlothian (Midlothian) (2-0) earned the pitching win in relief with the final 3.2 scoreless innings on the mound, yielding just two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Classmate Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) had went the first 5.1 innings on the mound, allowing 11 hits and five earned runs with four strikeouts.
JMU’s Patrick Riley (0-3) took the pitching loss in middle relief with 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run. Greg Nesbitt had pitched the first 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and four earned runs with one strikeout.
As mentioned, it was the first-ever win by Longwood over James Madison in baseball as the Dukes had won the previous seven meetings between the two institutions.
