Baseball Falls 8-0 At University of Virginia

Junior Corey Huemmer Goes 1-3 Against Cavaliers

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped an 8-0 baseball decision at the University of Virginia Tuesday at the UVA Baseball Stadium in Charlottesville. The Lancers dropped to 4-14 this season while the Cavaliers improved to 9-6 with their home victory.

At Virginia, the Cavaliers of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) led 1-0 after one inning and never looked back while adding three runs in the third, one run each in the fourth and sixth, and two more runs in the eighth inning. Virginia got two hits each from Brandon Guyer (2-4, 3 RBI), Ryan Zimmerman (2-4, RBI), and Mike Campagna (2-3). Guyer provided the big hit with a two-run home run in the third inning. Robert Poutier (1-0) earned the pitching win for the Cavaliers with a complete-game shutout, yielding six hits with eight strikeouts over the 9.0 innings.

Junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-3) and sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4) each collected a hit for Longwood. Sophomore left-handed pitcher Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (0-5) took the mound loss with the first 2.0 innings and allowing five hits and four earned runs with one strikeout.

Longwood and Virginia were meeting for the eighth-time ever, but for the first time since 1985, a 3-2 setback to the Cavaliers who now lead the overall series 6-2. The Lancers are scheduled to play at Virginia again next month on April 20.
