FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University split a baseball doubleheader against visiting Towson University Sunday at Lancer Stadium, winning 10-6 in the opener before falling 7-6 in the nightcap. The Lancers are now 4-13 this season and will play again Tuesday, March 8, at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville at 4 p.m..
In the opener against Towson, Longwood pounded 15 hits, including two home runs, en route to the triumph. The Lancers trailed 2-0 through four innings but rallied back with four runs in the fifth inning, and led 5-2 after six innings before adding four more runs in the seventh inning to secure the win.
Sophomore Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (3-4, 4 RBI) led the attack with three hits, including a one-out grand slam home run to left field in the decisive seventh inning. The bases-loaded blast was Childress’ first homer this season. Sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (3-5, RBI) also had three hits, including a two-out RBI double in the fifth inning, for the Lancers. Senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-3, RBI), junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (2-4, RBI), and sophomore Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-3, RBI) each collected two hits for LU. Yarbrough started the comeback with a lead-off, solo home run to left field in the fifth inning, while Huemmer added a one-out RBI single in the fifth, and Balus had a two-out RBI infield single in the sixth inning.
Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) pitched the first 7.0 innings for his first collegiate mound win, allowing just four hits and two earned runs with seven strikeouts.
Towson was led by Shane Justis (3-5, RBI) who had three hits and a stolen base, along with Adam Heffron (2-4, 2 RBI), Casper Wells (2-4, 2 RBI), and Pat Fields (2-4) with two hits each. Chris Rhoades (0-2) took the pitching loss with the first 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs with five strikeouts.
In the nightcap, Longwood allowed two unearned runs to the Tigers in the sixth inning, courtesy of three errors, that proved the difference for the visitors in a closely-played contest. Towson was led by Hans Falkenhan (3-5, RBI) who had three hits, including an RBI double in the first inning. Justis (2-4, RBI), Heffron (2-4, RBI), and Fields (2-4) each contributed two hits to the 13-hit Tiger attack. Towson took advantages of 2-0 (1), 3-2 (4), 5-2 (5), and 7-3 (6). The Lancers plated three runs in the sixth inning to close to within 7-6 but could not add any more runs to the scoreboard.
Longwood’s 12-hit attack was led by Childress (2-5), senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-4, 2 RBI), and freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-3, RBI) with two hits each. Balus (1-4, RBI) and Ames (1-4, RBI) each hit solo home runs to left field for the Lancers. Sophomore Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (1-3) took the mound loss while pitching the first 4.0 innings and allowing 10 hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts.
Towson’s Joe Peeler (1-1) earned the victory with the first 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four earned runs with four strikeouts. Jason Volker (1) got the save with the final 2.0 scoreless innings, allowing three hits with one strikeout.
