Women's Lacrosse Drops 16-6 Decision To Visiting St. Bonaventure

Junior Ali Shafer Tallies Goal in Setback

FARMVILLE, Va. -- St. Bonaventure University took a 16-6 decision past host Longwood University in a women’s lacrosse match Saturday afternoon at Lancer Field. Freshman Brenna Houghton notched three goals and had an assist in the game to help propel the visiting Bonnies to victory. The Lancers, who are now 1-1 on the season, will be back in action Tuesday, March 8 when they face off against George Washington. Game time is slated for 3:30 p.m.

St. Bonaventure took a quick 3-0 lead on goals by Kelly Cheves, Nicole Montonda and Courtney Gibbons. Longwood cut the score to 3-1 when senior Isa Cohen/Mineral (Fairfax) scored at the 10:18 mark. SBU scored six more times before half to hold a 9-3 lead, which proved to be a margin to wide for the Lancers to overcome.

Closing out the scoring for the Lancers in the first stanza were sophomore classmates Missy Rumbley/Baltimore, Md. (Parkville) and Cathleen Strain/Alexandria (Mount Vernon)

Second-half scoring yielded three more goals for Longwood and seven more for St. Bonaventure. Scoring for LU in the second stanza was Cohen, juniors Ali Shafer/Fairfax (Fairfax) and Jenn Shipp/Charlottesville (Albemarle). All three goals came on free position shots.

On the day, the Bonnies led in shots (36-17) and draw controls (14-9), while the Lancers led in ground balls (41-28). Shafer led Longwood in ground balls with seven. Junior goalkeeper Emily Wilson/Owings, Md. (Northern) finished the game making nine saves for the Lancers; two in the first half and seven in the second stanza. She also had three ground balls.
