Baseball Falls To Visiting Towson 6-1

Senior Robert Gillis (1-3) Collects Hit, Lone Run Against Tigers

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 6-1 baseball decision to visiting Towson University Monday at Lancer Stadium in Farmville. The Lancers dropped to 7-16 this season while the Tigers improved to 8-6 with their road victory. Longwood will play again Wednesday, March 23, hosting Coppin State at Lancer Stadium beginning at 2:30 p.m..

Against Towson of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), each team scored a run in the third inning before the Tigers scored three runs in the fourth inning to take control. TU added two more runs in the sixth inning for the final margin of victory.

Towson was led by Jason Maxey (1-3, 3 RBI) who hit a three-run home run in the decisive fourth inning. Kyle Skellchock (1-4, 2 RBI) added a pair of RBI for the Tigers, and Ryan Schreiter (2-4, RBI) had a pair of singles and an RBI for the visitors. Chris Rhoades (1-2) earned the pitching win for Towson with the first 7.0 innings on the mound, scattering four hits and no earned runs with six strikeouts.

Senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (1-3) scored the lone Longwood run on a throwing error in the third inning. Junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (1-3), along with freshmen Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (1-3) and Joe Bott/Elyria, Ohio (Elyria Catholic) (1-4) each collected a hit for the Lancers. Freshman John Farrell/Nantucket, Mass. (Nantucket) (2-2) took the mound loss with the first 5.1 innings while yielding five hits and two earned runs with three strikeouts.

Longwood and Towson were meeting for just the third-time ever after splitting a doubleheader in Farmville March 6. The Tigers now lead the overall series 2-1.
