Baseball Blanks Saint Peter's 11-0 For First Shutout Of Season; Sweeps Weekend Series

Sophomore Brian McCullough Earns First Win Of Season Against Peacocks

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University took an 11-0 baseball shutout victory past visiting Saint Peter’s Sunday at Lancer Stadium, completing the three-game weekend series sweep of the Peacocks.  It was the first three-game series sweep of the season for the Lancers who improved to 7-15 this season, while Saint Peter’s dropped to 0-7.  Longwood is scheduled to host Princeton University of the Ivy League on Monday, March 14, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Lancer Stadium in Farmville.

Longwood scored all the runs it would need in the first inning, crossing the plate five times, adding two runs in the second inning, one run in the fifth inning, two more runs in the sixth inning, and a final run in the seventh inning.  The Lancers finished with 14 hits, including three doubles, while sophomore starting pitcher Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (1-2) and late relief pitcher Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) combined for a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts.  McCullough went the first 7.0 innings and limited SPC to just two hits with six strikeouts, while Horn finished the final 2.0 innings with three strikeouts for the program’s first shutout of the season.
    
Sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (3-5, RBI) had three hits to lead LU, including an RBI single in the fifth inning along with a double.  Collecting two hits each were seniors Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (2-4, 2 RBI) and Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (2-4, 2 RBI), junior Corey Huemmer/Abingdon, Md. (Eastern Tech) (2-3, 2 RBI), along with freshmen Louis Ullrich/Centreville (Westfield) (2-4, RBI) and Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) (2-5, RBI).  Balus and Gillis each had a pair of RBI singles on the day, Huemmer added an RBI double and an RBI single, Ullrich had an RBI single along with a double, and von Gersdorff contributed an RBI single as well.
    
Saint Peter’s was led by Frank Salvano (1-3) and Wayne Guarino (1-3), each with a hit.  Santo Maertz (0-2) took the mound loss for the Peacocks with the first 1.2 innings, allowing eight hits and six earned runs with two strikeouts.
    
Longwood outscored Saint Peter’s 33-8, and out-hit the Peacocks 45-21 during the three-game series.  It was the Lancers’ first-ever meeting against the Division I school from Jersey City, New Jersey, members of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
