CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Longwood University dropped a 5-1 baseball decision to Charlotte Tuesday at Phillips Field in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Lancers dropped to 1-10 this season while the 49ers improved to 3-2 with the victory. Longwood and Charlotte will play again Wednesday, Feb. 23, at 4 p.m..
Charlotte scored two runs in the first inning, and one run in the second inning en route to a 3-1 lead after three innings. The 49ers secured the triumph with two insurance runs in the eighth inning. The Lancers had just four hits in the contest, including a 1-2 effort at the plate from freshman Nick von Gersdorff/Purcellville (Loudoun Valley) who hit his first collegiate double. Freshman Travis Lydon/Westlake, Ohio (St. Edward) (1-2), senior Robert Gillis/Dartmouth, Nova Scotia (Auburn Drive) (1-1), and sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-4) each added hits for Longwood.
Sophomore Alan Moore/Richmond (Monacan) (0-2) took the mound loss while pitching the first 4.0 innings and allowing three hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts.
