Baseball Drops Pair Of One-Run Games At Wofford; 5-4, 6-5

Sophomore Charlie Yarbrough Slams First Homer Of Season Against Terriers

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Longwood University dropped a baseball doubleheader at Wofford College Saturday in South Carolina, falling 5-4 in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap.  The Lancers are now 1-9 this season and will play the three-game series finale against the Terriers (3-5) on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1:30 p.m..

In the opener, Longwood and Wofford were involved in a close game as the Terriers led 3-2 after six innings.  The Lancers scored two runs in the seventh inning for the 4-3 lead only to witness the hosts score two runs on a one-out, two-run double in their final at-bat for the win.  Sophomore Tyler Ames/Exmore (Northampton) (1-3, RBI) had a game-tying RBI double in the seventh, and scored the go-ahead run on an infield single by senior Chris Balus/Newport News (Denbigh) (1-4) combined with an error.  Collecting two hits each were sophomores Tyler Childress/Montclair (Forest Park) (2-3) and Charlie Yarbrough/Richmond (Mills Godwin) (2-3).  Sophomore Brian McCullough/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) (0-2) took the pitching loss with the final 2.0 innings, allowing one hit and two earned runs with two strikeouts.     
    
In the nightcap, Longwood again dropped a close one-run game.  The Lancers did trail 6-2 through four innings before rallying with three runs in the seventh inning for the final margin.  Yarbrough (1-4, 2 RBI) hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the seventh.  Childress (2-4, 2 RBI) added a pair of doubles, including a two-run double in the first inning, and Ames (1-4, RBI) also had an RBI for LU. Sophomore Clay Horn/Culpeper (Culpeper County) (0-2) took the mound loss while pitching the first 3.0 innings and allowing four hits and four earned runs with one strikeout.
