FARMVILLE, Va. – Longwood University dropped a 82-58 women’s basketball decision to visiting in-state opponent William and Mary this evening at Willett Hall in Farmville. The loss drops the Lancers record to 2-4 overall, while the Tribe improved their record to 3-2. Longwood was led by senior forward Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) who registered her fourth double-double of the season, scoring 20 points and grabbing 10 rebounds; both team-highs. LU will be back in action Saturday, December 3 when it plays at Maryland-Baltimore County. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
William and Mary controlled the game from the tip as Kyra Kaylor scored a quick jumper five seconds into the game and then increased its lead to 9-1 with 16:19 to play in the contest. Kaylor sank one-of-two free throws, while Dani Kell scored three-straight baskets to give the Tribe the eight-point lead. Longwood cut the lead to four at 11-7, but Jalen Boone and Tiara Cruse both scored baskets for William and Mary to push its advantage back to eight, 15-7, at the 11:50 mark.
The Lancers came alive with a 10-2 run of its own to knot the game at 17-17. Freshman forward Amber Sims/Lawrenceville (Brunswick Senior) nailed a jumper, Mason hit two free throws followed by a three-pointer and freshman Nadege Wandeu/Douala, Cameroon (Oak Hill Academy-Va.) converted a three-point play to help Longwood tie the game.
The Tribe stopped LU’s run and was again able to gain some breathing room after Lizzie Schiel made a jumper at the 3:27 mark to give William and Mary a 31-20 edge. Two more made free throws and a layup by Mason sliced the Tribe’s lead to five, but Kaylor converted a three-point play of her own with 20 seconds remaining in the first half to give William and Mary a 33-25 edge at halftime.
The Tribe came out of halftime roaring, increasing their lead to 17 at 51-34 after Dell sank a three-pointer with 13:55 remaining in the contest. The Lancers were able to cut the lead to 10, 55-45, with an 11-4 spark capped off on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Leigh Mascherin/Greensboro, N.C. (Ragsdale), but William and Mary buckled down and surged ahead by 27 at the 4:55 mark after a 21-4 run and finished the game with the 24-point victory.
Besides Mason, the Lancers were led by Sims and Mascherin who scored 10 and six points, respectively. Longwood shot 34.5% (20-58) from the floor, including 27.8% (5-18) on three-pointers, and was 68.4% (13-19) from the charity stripe. Longwood committed 23 turnovers and were outrebounded 39-35.
The Tribe was led by Kaylor who finished with a double-double of 23 points and 15 rebounds; both game-highs. Kell added 18 points and six rebounds, while Schiel chipped in 12 points and four assists. William and Mary shot 54.8% (34-62) from the field, including 47.1% (8-17) on three-pointers, and was 50.0% (6-12) at the free throw line.
