Men's Soccer Falls At George Mason 2-1

Freshman Alex Lubinsky Scores First Collegiate Goal

FAIRFAX, Va. – George Mason scored two late second-half goals within 23 seconds of each other to claim a 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Longwood University in a men’s soccer match this evening in Fairfax. The Lancers (0-2) will be back in action Sunday when they travel to North Carolina for a game against East Carolina. 

Longwood took the quick 1-0 lead when they scored in the 11th minute of the game. Freshman Alex Lubinsky/ Springfield, Va. (Robert E. Lee) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist by freshman Todd Runey/Midlothian, Va. (Collegiate).

The Lancers held the Patriots scoreless until junior Anthony Noreiga scored with less than three minutes to play in regulation to tie the game at 1-1. Noreiga found the back of the net off a corner kick taken by senior Danny Climo at the 87:24 minute mark. Exactly 23 seconds later, George Mason tallied its second goal of the night to climb ahead of Longwood, 2-1. Junior Teba McKnight scored off an assist by senior Damien Quinn.

For the match, the Patriots had 10 shots on goal, while the Lancers finished with seven. Freshman goalkeeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake, Va. (Great Bridge) made seven saves on the day.
