HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Longwood University dropped a 3-0 men’s soccer decision at nationally-ranked #23 James Madison University Friday night in Harrisonburg during the first round of the JMU Tournament. The host Dukes improved to 7-0, while the Lancers are now 0-7. Longwood will play again Sunday, September 26, against Elon University during the second round of the JMU event.
James Madison led 2-0 at the intermission after goals from Mark Totten at 11:18 and Denny Fulk at 33:33. Totten’s opening goal came off a cross from Bobby Humphrey, while Fulk’s tally was assisted by Chad Quenneville. The Dukes added an insurance goal in the second half at 71:02 when Andrew Walker scored off a long ball played by Fulk.
James Madison, #23 in the Soccer America rankings and #6 in the NSCAA South Atlantic Region, took a 23-7 advantage in shots, though only a 3-2 edge in corner-kick opportunities. Longwood senior captain Stuart Bertsch/Norfolk (Maury) led the Lancers with four shots, while freshman keeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake (Great Bridge) went the distance in front of the net with 10 saves. JMU’s Kevin Trapp made one save while preserving the shutout for the hosts.
It was the first-ever meeting between the two state institutions in men’s soccer.
