ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop University scored two early second half goals to defeat the visiting Longwood Lancers in a men’s soccer match Friday evening in the first round of the Wingate Inn Classic in Rock Hill, S.C. The Lancers dropped to 0-4 on the season, while the Eagles improved to 1-1. Longwood will play again tomorrow, September 11, against Gardner-Webb in the second round of the classic hosted by Winthrop. Game time is slated for 2:00 p.m..
After a scoreless first half, Winthrop got on board first when freshman Sean Weron scored on a diving header off a cross from junior Lloyd Gofton. The Eagles increased their lead to 2-0 in the 89th minute after freshman John Gilkerson placed a ball to junior Dee Vydra, who had gotten behind the Lancer defense. Vydra beat freshman goalkeeper Matt VanOekel/Chesapeake, Va. (Great Bridge) for the winning goal.
Longwood, who fought hard all night, scored a minute and seven seconds after Vydra’s goal. Freshman Todd Runey/Midlothian, Va. (Collegiate) scored his first collegiate goal on a header off a free kick taken by freshman Mike Negash/Charlottesville, Va. (Charlottesville) at the 89:29 minute mark of the contest.
VanOekel finished the match with four saves, two in each half, while Winthrop senior goalkeeper Steve Winton finished with one. The Lancers held the 4-2 advantage in corner kicks, while the Eagles took the 14-6 advantage in shots.
