Men's Basketball Falls 88-56 At Old Dominion

Freshman Lamar Barrett Tallies 17 Points Against Monarchs

NORFOLK,  Va. – Longwood University dropped an 88-56 men’s basketball decision at Old Dominion University Monday night in Norfolk.  The Monarchs (10-1) had four players in double-figure scoring, led by Isaiah Hunter with 17 points, while the Lancers (1-12) were led by freshman Lamar Barrett/Providence, R.I. (St. Andrews) with 17 points.  Longwood will play again Thursday, Dec. 23, at Northern Iowa beginning at 8:05 p.m. in its opening game of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic.

Longwood started fast, jumping ahead 8-5 during the opening 2:11 on three-pointers from sophomore Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) and Barrett, along with a basket from sophomore Maurice Sumter/Alexandria (T.C. Williams).  Old Dominion came right back with a 14-5 run to lead 19-13 at 12:20.  The Monarchs led 27-17 with 8:57 left in the first half before 10 unanswered points had the hosts in front 37-17 at 3:40.  ODU led 44-22 at halftime.

Longwood closed to within 48-29 early in the second half at 17:39 on a layup from Jefferson.  ODU, however, ran off 12-straight points to lead 60-29 with 13:35 remaining.  The Lancers could get no closer than 24 points (63-39, 9:35) despite seven three-pointers in the second half, including four by Barrett.  The Monarchs extended their advantage to as many as 35 points late in the contest (85-50, 2:23) as both teams emptied their benches.

Barrett led Longwood with his team-high 17 points, including 5-6 on three-pointers, as the only Lancer to reach double-figures.  Sophomore Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) added nine points on three treys, while Jefferson finished with seven points and five rebounds.  Junior Chad Kosmo/Northport, Maine (Maine Central Institute) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Lancers, adding six points, as did Sumter.  LU shot 31% (20-65) from the field, including 42% (10-24) on three-pointers, and 60% (6-10) at the line.

Hunter led Old Dominion with his team-high 17 points, adding six assists, while Valdas Vasylius scored 11 of his 15 points off the bench in the second half.  Alex Loughton finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Arnoud Dahi scored all 11 of his points in the first half for the Monarchs.  ODU shot 52% (34-66) from the field, including 30% (7-23) on three-pointers, and 72% (13-18) at the line.

It was the first-ever meeting between the two institutions as Old Dominion entered the contest ranked 17th in the latest CollegeRPI.com ratings.  Longwood entered the game ranked 313th among the 330 NCAA Division I programs rated.
