Women's Basketball Defeats William and Mary 60-46

Senior Marita Meldere Scores 17 Points and Grabs 17 Rebounds in Victory

Williamsburg, Va. – Longwood University earned a 60-46 women’s basketball victory over William and Mary in Williamsburg this evening. The Lancers, who improved to 2-1 on the season, were led by senior forward/center Marita Meldere/Rujiena, Latvia (Lynchburg Christian) who finished with her second-straight double-double, scoring a game-high 17 points and grabbing a game-high 17 rebounds. Longwood will be back in action when they travel to North Carolina to partake in the UNC Wilmington Tournament, November 26-27. The will face off against host UNC Wilmington on Friday, November 26 at 5:00 p.m.

Longwood scored the first points of the contest, a three-pointer by senior forward/center Catherine Dunn/Aberdeen, N.J. (St. John Vianney), and then built an 11-6 edge with 13:38 remaining in the first half. William and Mary (0-2) scored four-straight points to pull within one, 11-10, but layups by Meldere and junior forward Ashley Mason/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) pushed the Lancers lead to five with less than seven minutes remaining on the clock.

The Tribe put together a quick run, scoring the next eight out of 10 points to pull ahead for the first time 18-17 at the 3:17 mark. After flip-flopping the lead twice, the Lancers regained the advantage for good and went into the locker room with the 25-22 edge.

Longwood kept William and Mary at bay for the majority of the second half, but with 6:24 remaining in the contest the Tribe tied the game at 41-41 off a jumper by Devin James. The Lancers buckled down and went on a 10-2 run to gain a eight-point lead at 51-43. William and Mary could not overcome Longwood as the Lancers earned the 14-point road victory.

In addition to Meldere’s game-high of 17 points on 7-for-24 shooting and 3-for-4 shooting from the charity stripe, and game-high 17 rebounds, 10 of which were offensive, Ashley Mason added 17 points, four rebounds and one steal. Longwood shot 38.9% (21-54) from the floor, including 42.9% (3-7) from behind the three-point arc, and 57.7% (15-26) at the charity stripe.

William and Mary was led by Kyle DeHaven who finished with a team-high 14 points, while Kyra Kaylor added 12 points, nine rebounds and three steals. The Tribe shot 25.0% (16-64) from the floor, including 13.3% (2-15) on three-pointers, and was 57.1% (12-21) from the free throw line.
