Field Hockey Earns 5-0 Victory Over Visiting Catawba

Junior Alexis Ramey Scores Two Goals in Victory

FARMVILLE, Va. -- Longwood University earned a 5-0 victory over Catawba College in a field hockey match Friday afternoon at Barlow Field in Farmville. Junior classmates Alexis Ramey/Westminster, Calif. (Marina) and Sarah Hitchings/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) both scored two goals for the Lancers. Longwood (4-9) will play again when it travels into Maryland for a game against Towson, Friday, October 15. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m..

Longwood led just 1-0 at the intermission after Ramey scored a goal that was assisted by junior Julie Price/Stafford, Va. (North Stafford) at 31:58. The Lancers added four goals in the second half to secure the victory. LU goals came from Ramey at 51:18, Hitchings at 54:15 and 70:00, and freshman Mary Freeman/Fredericksburg (Stafford) at 65:30. Junior Echo Naugle/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) assisted on both Freeman’s and Hitchings second goal, while junior Marina Sizow/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) assisted on Hitchings first goal.

Longwood took a 11-5 advantage in shots, and had a commanding 13-1 edge in penalty-corner opportunities. Senior keeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) and freshman keeper Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) combined for the Lancers third shutout of the season. The Indians, who fell to 0-10 on the season, got six saves from Lauren Weitzel.
