CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The University of Virginia took a 8-0 decision past visiting Longwood University in a field hockey match Wednesday evening. The host Cavaliers got three goals from Mia Link, including two in the second half. The Lancers (3-9) will be back in action when they host Catawba, Friday, October 8 at Barlow Field. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m..
Virginia notched six goals in the first half to take control of the game. Katie Phillips scored two goals in the first stanza, including the ultimate game-winner 11 minutes into the half. Katie Jo Gerfen, Lindsey Selfridge, Abby Taylor and Link all scored goals in the first half as well. Link closed out the scoring for the Cavaliers, tallying a goal at the 36:18 and 43:49 minute mark, respectively.
The Lancers were limited to two shots in the game, while the Cavaliers finished with 26. Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) and freshman Avanell Schmitz/Newport News (Denbigh) split time in front of the cage for Longwood. Patterson finished with nine saves, while Schmitz made five.
