BOONE, N.C. -- Longwood University took a 3-1 decision past host Appalachian State in a field hockey match Sunday afternoon in Boone, N.C.. The visiting Lancers improved to 6-10 on the season, while the Mountaineers fell to 4-11 overall. Longwood will close out its season when they face Bellarmine Saturday, October 30. Game time is slated for 3:00 p.m..
The Lancers took an early 1-0 lead when junior Sarah Hitchings/Virginia Beach (Kempsville) scored at the 8:29 mark. Sophomore Katie Murphy/Virginia Beach (Princess Anne) was credited with the assist. Longwood pushed its lead to 2-0 when Murphy scored her second goal of the season on a penalty corner taken by classmate Katy Lernihan/Fredericksburg (Chancellor) with 13 second remaining in the first stanza. Senior Lorrie Watts/Fredericksburg (Stafford) closed out the scoring for the Lancers when she tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 47th minute. Lizzie Watson of Appalachian State scored the Mountaineers lone goal at 64:14.
Appalachian State took the slight 9-5 advantage in shots, while Longwood held the 5-4 edge in penalty-corner opportunities. Senior goalkeeper Julie Patterson/Esmont (Monticello) finished the day with three saves for the Lancers, while Kate Ryno and Mikayla Paulson combined for two saves for the Mountaineers.
