BOX SCORE

MISENHEIMER, N.C. – Longwood University dropped a 95-79 men’s college basketball decision at Pfeiffer University Friday night in the first round of the 5th Bobby Lutz Invitational in North Carolina.  The Lancers, now 2-3, will play Lenoir-Rhyne College in the consolation game of the tournament Saturday at 6 p.m..  Longwood defeated Lenoir-Rhyne 63-62 earlier this week (Nov. 25) at L-RC.

Pfeiffer scored the first eight points of the game before Longwood rallied back to tie the game at 10-10 just three minutes into the contest.  The first half remained close before a late run by the Falcons gave the hosts a 55-48 lead at the intermission.  The Lancers fought back early in the second half to narrow the margin to 67-65 with just under 13 minutes remaining.  Pfeiffer, however, was able to slowly extend its advantage down the stretch and pull away for the victory.

Longwood was led by freshman Michael Jefferson/Chesterfield (Meadowbrook) who tied his career-high with 22 points.  Senior All-America candidate Charles Stephens/Danville (GW-Danville) added his third consecutive double-double effort with 18 points and 17 rebounds, along with five blocks.  Freshman Husein Pistoljevic/Richland, Wash. (Hanford) finished with 11 points off the bench, adding four assists, while senior Nathan Fortener/Hartford, Ky. (Ohio Co.) had 10 points for the Lancers.

Longwood shot 50% (35-70) from the field, including just 27% (4-15) on three-point field goals, and only 39% (5-13) at the free throw line.  Pfeiffer shot 39% (31-79) from the field, including 39% (9-23) on three-pointers, and 73% (24-33) at the line.  Kenny Mickens led the Falcons with a game-high 33 points off the bench, adding eight rebounds in just 23 minutes of action.  DeMario Grier added 24 points as he and Mickens were each 11-12 at the line (a combined 22-24).
