Women’s Basketball Stumbles at Elon 75-62

Elon, N.C. – Elon’s Courtney Nyborg and Holly Andrews each scored 16 points as the Phoenix defeated Longwood 75-62 in women’s basketball action Tuesday night at Alumni Gym.

In the early going, the Lancers (2-4) used an 8-2 spurt to transform a 14-9 deficit into a 17-16 edge on a jumper by Marita Meldere (Rujiena, Latvia/Lynchburg Christian) with 9:33 to play in the first half. The Phoenix (2-1) outscored the visitors 18-12 the rest of the way in the opening stanza to capture a 34-29 halftime advantage. The first half featured three ties and three lead changes.

Elon reeled off 26 of the second half’s first 36 points to build a 60-39 cushion with 11:09 on the clock. The Phoenix later pushed the advantage to 71-47 on a three-pointer by Andrews with 6:26 remaining. The Lancers could move no closer than 13 points after that.

The Phoenix built its biggest lead of the evening when Winner connected on a jumper from Lisa Miller to put Elon ahead by 25 at 68-43 with 7:46 remaining. The Lancers were never able to whittle the lead down to less than the final 13-point margin.

Longwood was led by sophomore Amber Mason’s (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) 16 points, including 10-of-10 from the free-throw line, and freshman Ashleigh Hollman’s (Centreville, Va./Westfield) 14 markers, including 4-of-5 from three-point range. Meldere was held to seven points, but pulled down 14 rebounds.
