ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Longwood University fell 3-1 at NCAA Division I Winthrop University Wednesday night in South Carolina.  The Lancers are now 2-6 this season and will play at Division III Mary Washington Saturday in Fredericksburg.

At Winthrop,  the Eagles appeared on the board first with a goal from Vali Arnason on a penalty kick.  Longwood junior Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk, Va./Maury) answered back on a penalty kick one minute into the second half.  The Lancers put on the defense, but couldn't stop Winthrop as Arnason and Lloyd Afriyie scored two late goals to give the Eagles the 3-1 victory.

Bertsch led the Lancers with three shots, followed by seniors Mark Connelly (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) with two and Shawn Spilman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), and freshmen Henrik Agerskov(Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) and James Agorsor (Gambrillis, Md./South River) with one each.  Lancer sophomore keeper Bryan Sanford (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) played 90 minutes and recorded six saves.
