ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Longwood University fell 3-1 at NCAA Division I Winthrop University Wednesday night in South Carolina. The Lancers are now 2-6 this season and will play at Division III Mary Washington Saturday in Fredericksburg.
At Winthrop, Â the Eagles appeared on the board first with a goal from Vali Arnason on a penalty kick. Â Longwood junior Stuart Bertsch (Norfolk, Va./Maury) answered back on a penalty kick one minute into the second half. Â The Lancers put on the defense, but couldn't stop Winthrop as Arnason and Lloyd Afriyie scored two late goals to give the Eagles the 3-1 victory.
Bertsch led the Lancers with three shots, followed by seniors Mark Connelly (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier) with two and Shawn Spilman (Cincinnati, Ohio/Oak Hills), and freshmen Henrik Agerskov(Denmark/Rungsted Gymnasium) and James Agorsor (Gambrillis, Md./South River) with one each. Â Lancer sophomore keeper Bryan Sanford (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) played 90 minutes and recorded six saves.
