Field Hockey Falls at No. 16 Virginia 5-0

Charlottesville, Va. -- The Longwood field hockey team faced 16th-ranked Virginia tonight, falling to the Cavaliers 5-0 at University Hall Turf Field.  Sophomore Echo Naugle (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) led the Lancer offense with two shots, followed by Sarah Hitchings (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and Anne Hundley (Norfolk, Va./Granby) with one each.

The Lancers came out strong in the first half, forcing the Cavaliers to burn their only timeout of the game in the opening minutes of the match.  Longwood got off two shots and two corners in the first five minutes, but couldn’t hold on as five different Cavaliers scored to get the victory.

Julie Patterson (Esmont, Va./Monticello) racked up seven saves in 70 minutes, while Virginia used three different goalkeepers and tallied a total of three saves.  Longwood was credited with four penalty corners. 

Up next, Longwood (0-4) heads to Pennsylvania for the weekend, facing Catawba at 10 a.m. and Kutztown at 12 p.m. on Saturday and on Sunday matching up against Indiana (Pa.) at 12:30 p.m.
