Farmville, Va. -- The Longwood University women’s soccer scored three minutes in to the game and never looked back as the Lancers drilled Division I Virginia Military Institute (VMI) 5-1 on rainy senior night at Lancer Field. Longwood victory gives them a record of 9-6-1, while the Keydetes drop to 3-11.
The Lancers came out in full force in the opening period as sophomore midfielder Melissa Cary (Bristow, Va./Brentsville) scored at the 3:50 mark off a cross from senior forward Phoebe Munson (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood). Freshman forward Tiffany Crane (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) made it 2-0 when she dribbled the ball past the goalie and shot it into the back of the net. VMI’s Collen Redmond connected on a penalty kick just before the end of the half to put the Keydetes on the board.
Sophomore midfielder April Lockley (California, Md./Leonardtown) beat the goalie for a score two minutes into the second stanza, giving Longwood a 3-1 advantage. Crane tallied her second goal of the evening as Lockley crossed the ball from the right side into the middle at the 52:01 mark. The Keydetes failed to convert a second penalty kick with 20 minutes to go, while junior forward Christine Clay (Amelia, Va./Amelia County) sealed the victory at the 72:48 mark, scoring off a rebound from a missed shot.
Longwood took the advantage on shots 21-5 and corner kicks 7-3. The Lancers split time in the cage between junior keeper Lindsay Naill (Alexandria, Va./Bishop Ireton) (45 min., 0 saves, 1 GA) and freshman Heather Storrie (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove). VMI keeper Haley Gross recorded 11 saves for the Keydetes.
The Lancers will play their final contest of the season on Oct. 29, hosting Division III’s 13th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan College on Lancer Field at 6 p.m.
