Charlottesville, Va. -- The Longwood University field hockey squad scored a goal in the first two minutes of today's game and never let up, scoring eight more times in the match as they defeated the Red Flash of Saint Francis 9-0 in Charlottesville, Va.
Longwood's Lorrie Watts (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford), who led all scorers with two goals and three assists, had the first goal just 1:35 into the game as she dribbled down the middle and deposited the ball in the boards for the early 1-0 lead.
Thirteen minutes later the Lancers drew a short corner and on the play Marina Sizow (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) took a pass from Katy Lernihan (Fredericksburg, Va./Stafford) and Erin Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) to the boards for Longwood's second goal, which came at 14:32. Five minutes later Watts sent a long ball through and Echo Naugle (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) caught up to it and took it to the cage, giving the Lancers a 3-0 lead. With time winding down in the first half, Watts again dribbled down the pitch and scored with just 1:27 to play in the half, giving Longwood a 4-0 lead at the break.
The Lancers got two quick goals in the second half as Lernihan took a short insert from Sixsmith and put the ball in the near side for a 5-0 lead at the 39:23 mark of the game. One minute later Watts took the ball to the endline and sent a crossing pass, where Julie Price (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) tipped the ball in the cage for LU's sixth goal of the game. Two minutes later Price struck again, collecting a loose ball in the circle and firing it to the boards for her second tally of the afternoon and giving the Lancers a 7-0 lead.
Longwood's Andrea Wilkinson (Chantilly, Va./Chanitlly) got on the scoreboard as she stuck a rebounded shot at the 41:12 mark from Sarah Hitchings (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) and Jen Hawkins (Virginia Beach, Va./Cox) rounded out the scoring as she took a long through ball from Katie Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) to the cage for the Lancers' ninth goal of the game.
Saint Francis starting keeper Kristen Onto had six saves in 46 minutes of play and Theresa King, who came on for the final 24 minutes, made three saves while allowing two goals. Julie Patterson (Esmont, Va./Monticello) and Chris Cimino (Fairfax Station, Va./Hayfield) split time for the Lancers and Patterson was not called upon to make a save while Cimino made two during her play in the second half.
Up next, the Lancers (5-9) hit the road to take on Lockhaven Oct. 18 at 1:30 p.m.., then face Mansfield Oct. 19 at 12 p.m.
